Inner principles — divine meanings embedded in creation

The logoi (not to be confused with the logismoi, the eight destructive thought-patterns) are the divine principles or meanings embedded in every created thing. Each thing in the universe — each rock, tree, person, star — contains a logos: a divine intention, a creative "word" through which God sustains its existence and draws it toward its purpose.

Maximos the Confessor developed this teaching most fully. For Maximos, the world is a kind of scripture — a text in which God's creative intentions can be "read" by the purified intellect. This reading of the logoi within creation is what the tradition calls natural contemplation (theoria physiki) — the second stage of the threefold spiritual path.

The practical implication is that the material world is not something to be escaped but something to be perceived truly. The person whose nous has been purified through prayer and watchfulness begins to see every created thing as a word of God — not metaphorically but actually. This vision transforms the experience of daily life: everything becomes a potential encounter with the divine.
