Coupling — when you start talking to the thought
Syndiasmos is the second stage of the temptation sequence — the moment when you begin engaging with the thought that has arrived. Where provocation (prosbole) is involuntary and carries no responsibility, coupling is the beginning of voluntary engagement: you're "talking to" the thought, entertaining it, imagining what it would be like to follow it. You haven't said yes yet, but you're having the conversation.
The tradition describes coupling as the dangerous transition point. The thought is still external, not yet part of you. But the longer you engage with it, the stronger it becomes. Cutting off the thought at this stage — before it reaches assent — is one of the core skills of watchfulness.
