Porneia
Desire
Porneia is the second pattern in Evagrius' sequence, building on the foundation of appetite. Where gastrimargia reaches for external objects, porneia generates its objects internally — the imagination produces fantasies and then the person responds to their own productions, creating a closed loop that disconnects from reality.
You might recognize this as any pattern where the imagined becomes more compelling than the actual — not just sexual fantasy (though that's included) but the wider phenomenon of living in your head rather than in your life. The idealized relationship that makes the real one look pale. The imagined future that makes the present feel insufficient. Any moment where imagination has replaced engagement with what's actually here.
The tradition does not treat desire itself as the problem. Desire is a God-given faculty — the capacity to reach toward what is genuinely good. Porneia is desire that has lost its object and turned in on itself. The antidote is not the elimination of desire but its redirection: from fantasy toward reality, from the imagined toward the present, from the constructed toward the encountered.
Evening review question: "Where today did your imagination pull you away from what was actually in front of you?"
