Self-mastery — the freedom to choose

Enkrateia is the capacity to govern your own impulses rather than being governed by them. It is not the suppression of desire but the freedom to choose whether and how to act on desire. The tradition treats it as one of the four cardinal virtues and the practical foundation of the contemplative life — because without basic self-governance, sustained prayer and watchfulness are impossible.
