Divine energies — God's own life, freely shared

Gregory Palamas' distinction between God's essence (forever inaccessible to creatures) and God's energies (God's own life, freely shared with creation) is the philosophical foundation of the Philokalia's central claim: that theosis (deification) is real participation in the divine life. The energies are not something less than God — they ARE God, genuinely present and accessible. But they are God as experienced, not God as comprehended.

This distinction is what allows the tradition to claim that the uncreated light experienced in deep prayer is not a created effect or a metaphor but a genuine encounter with the divine reality — without claiming that the human mind can contain or comprehend that reality in its fullness.
