Antirrhesis

Rebuttal

Antirrhesis is Evagrius' distinctive method of spiritual combat: responding to each destructive thought-pattern with a specific counter-word. Where cutting off thoughts is a silent, swift refusal, and mental rebuke is a brief "no," antirrhesis is precision medicine — you diagnose which of the eight logismoi is attacking and respond with the exact phrase that addresses it.

Evagrius compiled a massive work called the Antirrhetikos — essentially a field manual organized by the eight thought-patterns. For each pattern, he catalogued specific Biblical passages that directly counter the thought's suggestion. Under anger, he listed verses about compassion and forgiveness. Under restlessness, verses about steadfastness and endurance. Under pride, verses about humility and dependence on God.

The practice works because destructive thoughts gain power through vagueness — they operate best when they're not precisely identified. The moment you name the pattern AND respond with a specific counter-word, the thought loses much of its grip. You've moved from being acted upon to acting — from passive reception to active, informed response.

For modern practitioners, the Jesus Prayer can serve as a universal antirrhesis: whatever the pattern, the response is to return to the prayer. But Evagrius' method offers something more targeted — the recognition that different patterns require different responses, and the cultivation of a ready repertoire of counter-words for the patterns you encounter most frequently.
